Ever wonder who created that ever so popular lawn ornament, the Plastic Flamingo? Don Featherstone, a sculptor, fresh out of school and working at Union Products as a maker of plastic lawn ornaments in Massachusetts was tasked with creating a flamingo lawn ornament in 1957. The rest, as you can say is history. For nearly six decades the vibrant pink flamingo has occupied many suburban lawns serving as a symbol of an endless summer. In 1996 Featherstone was awarded an Ig Nobel Prize, an annual satirical award honoring outré contributions and became the president of Union Products where he served until his retirement in 2000.
Sadly Don Featherstone passed away on June 28th at the age of 79.
In his honor, today we celebrate by sharing a recipe for the Pink Flamingo cocktail. We will be making them and toasting to Don. His memory lives on.
