My family is one that passes Family Heirlooms down from generation to generation. Some are things of historical significance or monetary value such as a painting done by a famous artist. Others are items that have a special memory or tell a story. They may not be of value to society but they are invaluable to you. With my grandmother's recent passing, I have acquired a few of both. But the one item that holds a special place in my heart is an old belt that belonged to her and, I believe, my great grandmother before her. It was acquired in the Southwest, maybe Tucson or Santa Fe, and is handmade with varying sized pieces of turquoise, sterling silver and black leather. I think of all the hands that went into making the pieces and how many hands in family it has touched. I feel connected to all of them when I wear it. It has become a little weathered and aged (just as we all have) which gives it more character over time (just like I hope to).
